CFISD Partners in Education and Calvary's Partnership with Hairgrove Elementary Present...
Hairgrove Partnership
Calvary has joined with Copperfield Church in a partnership with Hairgrove Elementary. Our efforts reflect Mission Houston’s Whole and Healthy Children Emphasis. Caring adults can make a difference in the lives of staff and students in the public arena through mentoring, volunteering, praying, and giving. We long to see transformation in our community. Changing the lives of children, equipping mentors to become change-agents, and doing acts of Christ-centered goodness (Acts 10:38) will help us toward our goal of personal and community transformation.
There are many ways to get involved in the Hairgrove Partnership.
Contact Person: Patti Ressler, Calvary’s Coordinator for the Hairgrove Partnership
Mentors: A mentor is a role model who serves as a guide and a friend while helping a student with his/her educational and personal development. Training is required by CFISD.
Other Opportunities: There are a number of other ways to make a difference at Hairgrove: assist with Hearing / Eye Clinics, donate books, serve as a Bus Buddy (during the first 3 days of school each August), help touch families at Thanksgiving and Christmas, etc. See the list below for some ideas or ways to help. If you have questions or interest, please contact Patti Ressler.
Ways to serve and to touch the lives of children:
1. Be a mentor: As a part of our partnership with Hairgrove Elementary, you are invited to be a mentor for a student in the school. Mentors are role models and friends who meet with a student one hour each week during the regular school day. New mentors are required to attend training sessions conducted by CFISD.
If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please contact Patti Ressler at kargolf@earthlink.net. We want to keep you informed on training opportunities.
Here are the mentor training dates for the 2011 - 2012 school year. This file contains all the info on how to sign up for the training sessions.
2. Donate for the Book Drive: To bless the teachers and students we are holding a book drive for Hairgrove.
These books will supplement their library and provide books for students to take home and read. Please bring new or gently used books appropriate for students in K - 5th grades. Collection boxes are available in the Worship Center foyers. We usually hold the book drive in January and February of each year.
3. Save Box Tops for Education and Campbell Soup labels for Hairgrove
We collect those items here at Calvary and take them to Hairgrove. Please place your box tops and labels in the offering basket. We will make sure that they get to the right place. See www.boxtops4education.com for more info.
4. Volunteer to help with office tasks at the school
Serving and helping with specific tasks helps teachers and administrators to focus on what they need to get done in order to educate our children.
5. Help with Teacher Appreciation Activities
Contact Cheryl Moses if you want to help us express appreciation and blessings to the staff at Hairgrove.
6. Get trained this summer to serve as a mentor or reading mentor
If you would like to learn more, contact us and we will help you connect with someone who is already serving as a mentor. Cheryl can give you some names of different mentors who would love to share their stories with you. Plan to serve as a mentor or reading mentor starting in the fall of 2011.
7. Help with preparing meals for the science, math, and reading camps
Our partnership with Hairgrove and Copperfield Church is making a difference. Regarding the camps, in the 2009-2010 school year (the year we provided breakfast tacos), the student participation rate for the camps went up from 30% the prior year to 80 - 85% in 2009 - 2010. This year, by holding the camps on Fridays and providing dinner for the students, the participation rate is up to 90 - 95 percent. By providing a meal, snacks, and prizes, we have helped the school to help their most needy students. What an expression of love and what a significant impact.
8. Serve as a Bus Buddy for August, 2011
During the first three days of each school year, volunteers help elementary students get off the bus at the correct location. This service opportunity makes a difference in the lives of younger children as they adjust to school life. The approximate time of commitment is from 2:45 - 4:45 pm on August 22, 23, and 24. You can serve each day or just one of the days, whatever fits your schedule.
