The Lord Touches Back Pain

By Debi Buckles - April 2008

On Saturday of the Leadership Conference, I arrived with severe pain in the left side of my back in the sciatic area. The pain was shooting from the back to the front and down the front of my leg. This went on all day and the pain would cause waves of nausea. The whole time Michael Sullivant was speaking to us, I was battling my inner self with wanting to just leave and go to the chiropractor. I knew that my chiropractor would be in on Saturday, I could get an adjustment, go home, take some Advil, and get some rest. But, I didn't want to miss anything the Lord had for us through Michael. I don't know how I even paid any attention, since the pain was so distracting.

Finally, at the end of the day, Michael offered prayer for people with chronic pain or illness. I watched people being prayed for and my issue didn't categorize as chronic so I didn't get in line for prayer. As the line began to shorten, I finally got in line anyway, waited my turn, and then explained to Michael that this wasn't chronic, but I was hurting. I told him of the battle that I had been in all day. He asked me to sit down and hold out my legs to check the length of my legs. He prayed for healing, then he had me stretch my arms up, out, and in front of me to check for balance of my spine. Then he blessed me and dismissed me. Nothing earth shattering happened, but about two hours later, I was completely free from any pain and had complete freedom of movement. Praise the Lord!

Rest of the story: I have been seeing this chiropractor for over a year and the Lord has given me plenty of opportunities to share HIS truth with this non believer. I have always felt that whatever I have shared has been received by this doctor and many times he even initiates questions concerning my life as a believer in Christ. On Wednesday, I went in for an adjustment and told him about my experience on Saturday. I wasn't sure how he would respond, but as I was sharing, he told me that this was giving him goose bumps (I didn't say this but wanted to tell him Holy Spirit bumps!). This testimony opened the door for him to feel free to ask me about speaking in tongues. He told me he had talked to Dawn Rieke and Ashley (one of his assistants) about speaking in tongues and wanted to know where I was with this. I told him I did speak in tongues, and that yes it is weird. I also told him what the bible says in the book of Acts about this being a manifestation of the Holy Spirit on someone, but not the only manifestation. I explained different models that one would see in churches or on television. He asked me if Lakewood members speak in tongues. I told him yes, but that he wouldn't see that on television. I did talk briefly about the difference between tongues with an interpreter for congregations and privately praying in tongues for ministry, but I didn't use churchy words. And I talked about how speaking in tongues without interpretation doesn't really bless anyone but can cause confusion, then shared my first experience with the same thing. I told him that often when I don't have any more words, or just don't know what words to pray, I will pray in tongues, and how some people call this their prayer language. I then remember saying that ultimately whatever I do is supposed to bless others and glorify the Lord. It was just an awesome experience for me personally to share such a controversial topic with a non believer who is seeking truth. The Lord is good to give me open doors and freedom to share. Wow! I don't know who benefited more - me or him, but I know that God was present and blessed.
